Gospel Reflection for Wednesday, January 29, 2025

enero 29, 2025

What is my attitude toward the Word of God? Is it receptive, impermeable, welcoming, superficial, deep, joyful, constant, or restless? What kind of soil am I for the seed the Lord wants to plant in my life? Am I open, closed, hostile, dry, or fertile?

The sower sows the seed so that it may yield the greatest possible harvest, but this doesn’t always happen, and some seeds are lost. What a joy it is when the seed turns into an abundant grain in the ear!

Jesus told the “Parable of the Sower” to teach that the Gospel cannot be received in just any way, nor can it bear fruit in just any life. But He also wanted to show the confidence with which He worked to build a new world. Jesus knew that much of His work would seem wasted, yet He also knew it would bear fruit in many lives.

How often do the efforts of a mother, the dedication of an educator, or the work within a parish community or among neighbors feel like a failure? Don’t we need to work with the same trust that Jesus had? As J.A. Pagola notes: “Our task is not to reap success, conquer the streets, dominate society, fill churches, or impose our religious faith. What we need are sowers of hope.” Jesus gave us the Parable of the Sower, not the Parable of the Harvester.

With gratitude,
