Saint Rose of Lima, born Isabel Flores de Oliva in 1586, holds a revered position as the first canonized saint of the Americas. Renowned for her beauty, Rose took extraordinary measures to deflect attention from her physical appearance, even going so far as to disfigure her face with pepper and lye.

Living in a small hermitage in her family’s garden, she spent countless hours in contemplation and self-mortification, seeking to unite herself more closely with Christ. Her devotion often manifested in extreme acts of penance, including wearing a heavy silver crown embedded with thorns and fasting for extended periods.
