It makes you shudder to contemplate Jesus cursing a fig true. It was all a matter of appearance: foliage without fruit. It makes you shudder to think of Jesus being scorned in the presence of sentimental religiosity: superficial form and habit; vanity without solidarity; sentimentality without a change of heart.
