Not all mothers today necessarily regard their son as their greatest honor, but it was certainly so with Mary, the Mother of Jesus.  It is said that the best images of Mary have Jesus in them.  The mother-and-child theme is never exhausted.  There is tenderness and protection in every detail.  Such images of Mary have helped to keep the Faith warm for missions down the ages.  In Dostoyevsky’s novel, The Possessed, the old woman says, “The Mother of God is the Great Mother – the damp earth; and therein lies a great joy for us all.”  The most fertile earth is the image of the motherly womb.
