Commentary on the Gospel of
How can you be commanded to love? Love surely, has to come voluntarily: if it is commanded, will it still be love? Isn’t such a commandment a dreadful invasion of the inner being of a person? Isn’t it like cutting someone open to remove the heart? The command to love is an inner command, not one that is thrown at you from the outside. It is like the command that is built into a mango tree to become just that, the best kind of mango tree that it is capable of being.
