Commentary on the Gospel of

Joe Zaborowski-Creighton University Purchasing Department

How is God reaching me? How do I hear? How do I see?

In the first reading God made Himself known with thunder and lightning. Moses on Mount Sinai had no problem discerning when God was talking and what He was saying. It’s interesting to note in the Gospel that Jesus, the son of God, spoke of those who could not hear or understand. So that brings me to the initial questions I posed for myself. Today I find myself bombarded by noise and other people always talking and telling me what is good for me. Just spend your money on this product and it will change your life, watch this TV show and find the right way to live and what to believe politically, read this book or go to this seminar and find the formula for success, etc. etc. etc. The noise drones on and on.

Certainly everything we hear and see is not harmful. To find God for me, presuming he was lost and not myself, is to retreat from the noise. When I turn off the media and spend time in prayer, meditation and reading scripture I almost always find myself moving closer to God. As I move along in my spirituality, I find myself desiring Jesus and his message more and become less enamored with the worldly. The readings today are a good reminder to look, hear and listen for the presence of God in all things.
