Commentary on the Gospel of

Fred Hanna-Creighton University's Fine and Performing Arts Department

Early in my career, my wife and family moved a lot. We moved 8 times in 12 years, and for a time every year.  Once, we moved twice in one summer.  Thankfully, we have been in one place for the past 20 years.  Abram and Lot moved, too.  Moving, at its best, is difficult.  The household is in upheaval several weeks before and after.  The big day, the distance, the tiredness, the difficulty.

What better lesson to draw from todays readings than to focus on the Lord's words to Abram, "Look about you, and from where you are,…for to you I will give it."  Likewise, the psalmist's promise, "He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord."

No matter where we were, empty apartment, new surroundings, boxes stacked high, the Lord provided comfort, calmness, and the assurance that whatever we encountered, we would find peace.  He is the light of the world, and if we follow him we will have the "light of life."
