Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Johnson Joseph Thurackal CMF

Ex 14: 21 – 15: 1; Mt 12: 46-50

Pay attention to the word ‘stretch’ in both the readings. The word is significant.  In stretching out his hand over the sea, Moses ensures the safety of the Chosen people.  In stretching out his hand towards his disciples, Jesus envelopes the new family of God.

The bonding of this new family is not based on entitlement, as the Jews of Jesus’s day thought; not based on blood ties as Jewish culture taught; but on something rather novel --- enacting the will of God!  Another subversive teaching and action of Jesus.
