Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr Vittorio Bruschella cmf

Today's Word of God presents us with two characters in the dialogue, Esther with God, and three verbs: ask, seek and knock.

Queen Esther is alone and distressed. She is called to intercede for her people who are in exile. What she has are two feelings: these two feelings are impotence, in fact she says she is "like in front of a lion", ready to be torn to pieces; and on the other hand, she has great trust in God. It is a question of turning to God with the simplicity of the humble, an attitude that in the experience of the Jewish people has always touched the heart of God, moving him to act to "raise the humble".

In the Gospel we find the three verbs that substantiate each prayer: ask, seek, knock. Even our dialogue with the Father, while we are on the eve of the World Day of Prayer, knows how to ask for the wisdom of the heart, capable of being able to discern what is good from what is bad; seek the Kingdom of God above all else and knock like Esther, confident that God changes mourning into joy and suffering into salvation.
