Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Johnson Joseph Thurackal CMF

Jesus has some harsh words to the Pharisees who belittle the things of God and disrespect them. Jesus denounced the lack of coherence between word and attitude, between inside and outside evident in their lives. Much was expected from them who thought themselves to be better than the rest, who taught the faith, who defended the faith from any dilution. All their religious and spiritual endeavors were in vain because of their pride and love for money. They did not cultivate the mind of God nor did they give to God the key to their hearts.

In order to be a faithful observer of God’s law, it is important go beyond the letter of law to the deeper implications of them according to God’s mind. The fullness of the law is realized in the practice of love. St. Therese of Lisieux, from her own personal at the same time painful experience, learned how to reclaim the gratuitous of love of God, a force which should animate the observance of the norms from within, because, without love, the observance makes an idol of God. Every disciple of Jesus is called to live according to the Good News. Our life must be good news to others, as Jesus’ life is to us. Through us the love should continue to incarnate in this world that is hungry for love and meaning.
