Commentary on the Gospel of
Speaking the truth with love is always a challenge. Jesus even aroused doubt from within his own family. We don’t know why they acted as they did. Perhaps they were frightened for his safety, fearing that the opposition he aroused might endanger them or make them outcasts in their community. Maybe they disagreed with what he was saying or didn’t like that he spent time with those who were disabled or who were public sinners.
We might experience similar reactions when we strive to share in Jesus’ mission. People might be worried about our safety, especially if we take on powerful interests that neglect the poor. They might think that a negative view of what we do will rub off on them. They may call us hypocrites or avoid us because of the company we keep. All we can do is remain faithful to the mission of Christ, discerning his truth in the gift of the Holy Spirit and letting selfless love for our brothers and sisters guide our steps.
