Commentary on the Gospel of
Herod the Great, the father of the Herod of this story was married five times. He also had the dubious distinction of having killed everyone he ever loved. Surprisingly, this son survived and continued the family tradition of lust and cruelty. Innocent people die in the hands of such people: the Holy Innocents at the hand of the father, John the Baptist at the hands of the son. But innocence itself can never really be wiped out from the world.
